Sunday Shorts—An Offertory to Our Drowned Gods by Teresa Naval

coverThe first of the flash fiction pieces in People of Colo(u)r Destroy Science Fiction, this piece by Teresa Naval did a brilliant little job of characterization and world-building all in one, which is pretty damn sharp for a flash fic.

Told partly in flash-back, and partly in the present, this is a world flooded and ruined, and the story of JohnnyBoy (not her original name) and a surviving old man, Father (not her father), and of making it to morning, just one more day of survival. JohnnyBoy is clearly a survivor, but also aware of some of the history, and of who the first victims were (and always are)—as well as how the tales of those swept away are so often untold by those who survive.

It’s not by any means an uplifting story, but at the same time, it was so well told I didn’t quite mind the hopeless feel of it all.
